2005 Was A Good Year

Do you remember what you were doing in 2005? Reminisce over all those memories with  a nice glass of wine. Here is what’s on the menu….

From Bernard Magrez, owner extraordinaire of such esteemed Bordeaux properties as Pape Clement (among 20 others!). This little known estate is located 20 kilometers north of St-Emilion on the pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela. The vineyard is in the heart of the famous La Double forest, known for its stave oak used to make quality barrels. This stupendous buy is a blend of 75% merlot, 15% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc from vines averaging 20 years. Soils here have a high gravel and sand component, which adds to the eventual complexity and power of this delicious, ready-to-drink red. This wine has the structure of a classified growth and the sexy palate impression of a new world wine. Toasty oak and tobacco aromas with tons of very ripe fruit and rounded tannins make this wine taste quite good right now. Think of this as the niftiest ‘nearly St-Emilion’ you’ve ever had, and from a vintage already determined to be legendary! According to Robert Parker: “This lower pedigree wine represents undeniable quality/value rapport in 2005. This vintage is so deep in quality among the better run, less heralded estates, that these wines should appeal to readers looking for terrific values from Bordeaux. Most of these wines are Merlot-based and will be drinkable young.”

Another Glass Anyone

All I know is, this is going to be delicious. Here’s why……

Since the late 90s one of the best “Value” areas in Bordeaux is the Cotes de Castillon, just east of St Emilion. The have been many property owners from the prestigious regions of St Emilion, pomerol, etc moving into this area. One of our biggest 2005 Bordeaux sellers is d’Aiguilhe from Stephan von Neipperg of Canon La Gaffeliere fame. We first tasted this Chateau de l’Estang in April 2008 and fell in love with it immediately. We were able to convince the owner Jean Michel Ferrandez and his negociant to give us some cases of a special batch he had and we named it “Clos Kalinda Cuvee” Well here it is. And at a great price for such a pedigree. This property is a 26 hectare (53 acres) piece planted on rolling hills in Saint Genes de Castillon at a density of 5000 vines per hectare (lots of vines in small area). The vineyard is planted 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc with the average vine age of 35 years. There is a strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery -only 36 hectoliters per hectare (they are allowed 50). In 2005 the harvest started on October 1st and the wine was aged in 30% new and 30% one-year old barrels. And only 13.6% alcohol which is on lower level of the right bank Merlot wines from 2005. Air France has bought some of this wine to serve on their business class flights. We love the vibrant style of this wine. Deep color and blackberry aromas with a touch of cassis. The tannins are round and the wine has great acidity.

Now For Some Wine

So I am going to let the professionals tell you about these delicious wines. Here goes ~

A delicious, balanced blend of 55% merlot and 45% cabernet sauvignon from Château Maurac in Bordeaux’s Haut-Médoc. This château-bottled wine is a K&L Direct Import.  The wine has blackberry aromas that follow to the palate, showing power and richness from its northern Médoc location. It has a fine sweetness on the palate and a lingering finish. Will cellar well but also drinks beautifully now if you decant it one hour in advance and serve it with a rare New York strip. Do we have to remind you that 2005 was a fabulous year for Bordeaux?
